Casa da Lagartixa Preta: a laboratory for experimentation

The house is also a space for the friendship relationships strentghening, exchanges with other collectives and individuals, and expositions of the ideas and practices of the collective and other comrades who don’t have their own space. A space to try and diffuse the logic breakdown of our culture not only in libertarian spaces but also throughout the neighborhood, in families, non-activist or activist friends and so many others.
Another important factor of having a space like this is the alliance with other groups. As the collective has its laboratory and practice, other groups also get theirs and, that way, the exchanges get more concrete, more practical and more real, consequently building up a richer and stronger network of autonomous and independent exchanges which allows the collective to stay in other laboratory-spaces to exchange practical knowledge and to host other people in Casa da Lagartixa for the same reason, to strengthen one another bonds, to improve the knowledge, practice and autonomy.
In Casa da Lagartixa Preta…
- There is an agroecologic garden where previously there was a piece of land with much trash, and currently there are medicinal herbs, spices, banana trees, papaya trees, a guava tree, beans, corn, kale, vegetables and many spontaneous plants which the collective always learns something new about.
- There is a library where the collective realizes from language courses to more political study groups, all of those open to any interested person.
- The collective collects rain water and use it to water the garden and flush the toilet.
- The collective treats the water from the kitchen’s sink by deviating the pipe end to a circle of banana trees in the garden.
-
The collective built a hangar to keep all of the tools and the seeds bank.
Casa da Lagartixa Preta is self-managed by Ativismo ABC collective. According to its principles, the rent is paid through the funds of a monthly party, the donations from people who support the space and voluntary contribution from people who take part in the collective. The decisions are taken through consense, giving space for going wrong or right.
That way the collective proposes to build up a new possible world by side with other groups and spaces, be them anarchists, peasants, people from our neighborhood and any other one who believes a deeper social change is necessary.
